Extended Family


Pray for Your Extended Family


There are uncles, aunts, cousins, and grandparents who are a circle or two removed from the spiritual influences of our own lives. Maybe we don’t see them except at a family reunion or a cousin’s wedding or during the holidays, and I sometimes wonder if these people have anyone praying for them. My life has been so graced and redirected by people praying for me—but what about them? We may be the only ones praying for them!


In Genesis 18 Abraham plead with the Lord for Sodom, the city where his nephew Lot lived. God destroyed it and Gomorrah but remembered Abraham, and He “brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived” (Genesis 19:29). Job had a regular custom to make an altar and pray for his family, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts” (Job 1:5). Like Abraham and Lot, we must carry our family members before the Lord and pray for their salvation, claiming their lives for God’s purposes and not the enemy’s purposes.

Focus Today:

Make a list of your extended family members and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in how to pray for them. Ask the Spirit to show you ways to connect with them. Through this connection, you may become part of the answer to your prayers.


Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22)
